December 5, 2019

Isaiah 26:1-6

Psalm 118

Matthew 7:21, 24-27

Advent brings a time to take a deep breath and to anticipate.  But that anticipation also can have us looking back.  How did we get to this place?  And where does this path lead me?

Each of today’s readings talk about foundations.  In the first reading we have  strong city walls to protect us and gates that open to a nation that is just.  In the Gospel the parable warns against building a house on sand because it will be buffeted by rain, floods and winds until it collapses.  Jesus is telling us that we have to listen to His words.  But it’s not enough just to listen, we must act on them.  We have to build the foundation of our faith.

I suspect that the job of building a foundation of faith is a job that is never completed.  We are constantly learning and growing in our faith journey.  What we need to be concerned about is that we build on “solid rock” and not on sandy or shifting ground.   Once we’ve built that good framework on rock, on the solid ground of following the Words of Jesus, the way forward becomes clearer and easier.   Building is acting.  It’s more than just listening to the Gospel; it is living out the Gospel in our everyday lives by seeing God in all things.

Question of the Day:  In what ways will you build your personal foundation of faith and will you assist others in doing the same?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, I pray that I will work to build that solid foundation by listening to your Holy Words, and see the face of God in all that I see.

Consider joining the Men and Women of Malvern by deepening your personal relationship with Jesus and your commitment as a disciple through a weekend retreat.
