Book of the Prophet Jeremiah 17:5-10

Psalm 1:40-5a)

Luke 16:19-31

As we progress through the season of Lent and take stock of our progress we should understand the readings of today and allow them to speak to our hearts.  Jeremiah in particular helps us to remember our priorities in life.  God always comes first!  Reliance on Him alone before anyone or anything is something we need to keep in focus.  Lent, as well as throughout the rest of the year, we should focus on prayer, fasting and almsgiving as part of our traditional Lenten routine.  Our purpose is to draw closer to God and today Jeremiah confirms the importance of these actions.

Fifteen days ago on Ash Wednesday we were reminded that “we are dust and to dust we shall return.”  Both the Gospel and the Old Testament reading tell us that there is more after death.

In the reading from the Prophet Jeremiah we are promised to be rewarded according to our ways and according to the merit of our deeds.

A more vivid  picture of eternity is portrayed in Luke’s Gospel as Lazarus’ reward is much different than that of the rich man.

For me these readings have a hopeful message.  If I avoid the way of the wicked and follow and trust in the Lord we have the assurance that His grace will be upon us.  This advice is written in Holy Scripture and proved in the Resurrection and Ascension into heaven by Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Question of the Day:  Does God come first in your life?

Prayer:  Almighty God and Father, our source of power and inspiration, give us strength and joy in serving You as followers of Your Son, Jesus.
