Matthew 11:11-15

The season of Advent is about longing and desire and joy and recognition.  It also reflects the longing of the Lord for His beloved – all of us.  In today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah the tone ranges from a soft-spoken plea, to a desperate moan, to an angry roar.  The Lord pleads for recognition and relationship; “I am the Lord, your God, who grasp your right hand.”   The Lord begs for recognition in all that He has done for His people.  The Lord is desperate for the attention of His beloved.  The Lord is desperate for our attention as well.

In the Gospel narrative of Saint Matthew we read that the least born into the kingdom of God is greater that he, John the Baptist.  The tone is quieter and gentler, isn’t it?  However, the message is just as desperate, just as true and just as immediate.  We are all called into the kingdom.  Our Lord is calling to each one of us to be in relationship with Him.  In our joys and in our sorrows the Lord continues to long for us.

As we remember with wonder, joy and deep fulfilment of these frequent scenes should make us ponder what the Lord is doing now, today, to bring us into a deeper relationship with Him.  What then are our joyful cherished moments with the Lord?  Who, what, when, where are our private invitations to be with the Lord in order to enjoy the richness of the relationship we have with Him?   How do we express our profound thanks to our Lord God for reaching out to us in such a loving, personal way?  Think about it.  Better yet, pray about it.

Question of the Day:  How do you crave intimacy with the Lord God?

Prayer:  Father God, Your grace is my only hope.  Make me always conscious that You are near me.  Amen.
