Psalm 36

Matthew 13:10-17

Someone once said that God gave us two ears but only one mouth.  It was because He wanted us to spend twice s much time listening rather than speaking.  Others say it’s because He knew listening was twice as hard as talking.

In today’s Gospel narrative our Lord tells His disciples that not everyone would understand His parables.  During the time of Jesus parables are standard devices used by teachers and rabbis, like our Lord.  Parables have enormous suggestive power to trigger insight into the world of the spiritual life.  They reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.  Does Jesus mean to say that He is deliberately confusing His listeners?  It’s almost as though our Lord doesn’t want them to be able to understand Whom He is.  Or does He?

Jesus teaches using parables because He hopes the picture will seduce the mind of the listener away from His own self-interest.  He said, “I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.”

Sisters and brothers, the parables of Jesus will enlighten us if we approach them with an open mind and heart, ready to let them challenge us. If we want to hear and understand God’s Word and His Kingdom, we must listen, listen and listen some more.

Question of the Day:  How have you witnessed God’s presence in your life and trusted in His promises and understood its value?

Prayer:  Lord God, we understand that strong faith is a challenge for all, whether new to faith or a lifelong believer.  Today we pray for the courage to take that “leap” of faith and trust, commit, and have confidence in the Lord.  Amen.

Please continue to pray for the victims of the Coronavirus and for all who are affected by this unprecedented pandemic as well as for peace in our country and in our world.
