Letter of Saint James 2:1-9

Psalm 34

Mark 8:27-33

“Who do you say that I am?”  What a great and interesting way to begin a conversation.  Given the opportunity that Peter had how exactly would you answer the essential question that is the foundation of our faith?  It was easy for Peter to answer Jesus’ first question of, “Who do people say that I am?”  But the answer to that second question changed Peter’s life forever, and in many ways, ours as well.  “You are the Christ!”  Our good Saint Peter got it right on the first try.  “You are the Christ!”  How can you keep this a secret?  The man you are following is the promised Messiah, the Anointed One from God?  Unfortunately in today’s world “this secret” is being kept from too many people like the un-churched, the de-churched and all those others who have better things to do than to believe in their salvation and the Kingdom of God.

In the first reading, James admonished the early Christians to refrain from favoritism towards the “haves” of the day compared to the lowly and the meek.  This message to not show partiality is one of the refreshing themes of Pope Francis and is a core charisma of the Society of Jesus.  The Holy Father asks us to be in solidarity with those who seek social justice and is the basic action expected from the letter of Saint James.  In a nut shell, he tells us to not show favoritism and to love your neighbor as yourself.  But how often can we see the face of God in those who we may a conflict or disagreement with?  A question we must answer for ourselves through prayer and reflection.

So when we ask ourselves who Jesus is we must take solace in the fact that even Peter, the Rock of the Church was rebuked by Our Lord because even though he knew who Jesus was, he did not yet know the true nature of the Kingdom of God.  As we move forward each day we all have the advantage of knowing that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life and to continually pray to the Holy Spirit to guide us to the action Jesus desires from our recognition of Him as the Messiah and the Anointed One from God.

Question of the Day:  Who do you say Jesus is?

Prayer:  “Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life; you have the words of everlasting life.”  (Gospel acclamation for February 20, 2020.)
