Thursday of the Third Week in Advent

December 19, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Judges 13:2-7, 24-25a

Psalm 71

Luke 1:5-25

Today’s readings are an interesting history if one wants to know more about the parents of Sampson and John the Baptist.  Here were two couples who were without children and now, well past the time to conceive, they are blessed by God because of their unrelenting faith as each brings forth a son.  That these two couples never lost faith in spite of various hardships is worthy of our reflection.  But is there another deeper meaning within these readings that is worthy of our consideration?

We are a mere six days away from the most beautiful birth of all, that of Christ Jesus.  Our readings reinforce how truly precious the creation of life is and the joy that comes to all parents when they are made aware that they are expecting a child.  And then, is there anything greater for the couple than the birth of their child and to experience the miracle of creation?

As we head into these last six days before Christmas let us all focus not only on the power of prayer but on the miracle of creation as well.

Question of the Day:  Do you believe in the sanctity of life from natural conception to natural death?

Prayer:  Father, protect and give guidance to all parents as they raise their children through their Baptismal promise to love and serve You.
