The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

First Book of Maccabees 2:15-29

Psalm 50

Luke 19:41-44

Leaving your family is probably one of the most difficult things someone can do. When we were young many of us, me included, would count the days until we could be on our own.  As you get older, you begin to wish you could have those days back again.

Jesus was in His mother’s presence for thirty years and then He had to leave His family on His mission of salvation.  There was no turning back.  He was obedient to her and loved her very much – this we know.  Mary isn’t great because she is the mother of Christ.  She is great because she was faithful to God.

How do we look at the life of Mary?  We can assume she was a great teacher.  She taught Jesus how to fold His hands in prayer, how to notice and appreciate the simple things in nature, she fed Him, clothed Him and even wiped His nose when he had a cold.  Isn’t it amazing to think that Christ’s flesh is Mary’s flesh?  Christ’s heart comes from Mary’s heart.   But I believe her greatness goes beyond the physical realm.  If Mary had not said “yes” to God, our story of Jesus might be completely different from the one we know and love.

A mother often prays that her child will be successful.  A really great mother (and father) wants her child to be successful both here on earth and eventually in heaven.  Jesus Himself once asked, “Who is my mother?”  and, “Who are my brothers?”  The answer is a simple one – He points directly to us.  He places all of us in the same category with His mother.  Jesus has called us by name, pointed to us, to be His sisters and brothers.  This is the relationship we want.  In fact it’s a relationship we desperately need.

Today, the feast day of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary may we pray that the Lord may give us the grace to be what His mother was, Holy and Blessed in the sight of God.

Question of the Day:  Are you ready to join Jesus’ family as His sister or brother?

Prayer:  Jesus, my brother, let my whole being be consumed in the will of the Father so that I may be worthy of Your love.
