Thursday of the Twelfth week in Ordinary Time

June 25, 2020

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Second Book of Kings 24:8-17

Psalm 79

Matthew 7:21-29

William Barclay (1907-1978) was a Scottish minister, writer and Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow.   In his commentary on today’s Gospel narrative he said, “There is only one way to bring peace to the heart, joy to the mind and beauty to the life; it is to accept and do the will of God.”

Today’s Gospel is the conclusion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.  This passage, which is often repeated throughout the Holy Bible, points to the need to put one’s faith into action or practice.  That it is not enough to hear the Word of God but also we must apply then tour life.  We do this because “fine words can never replace good deeds.”

The underlying theme for today is one of personal relationship.  Jesus is continually and very gently inviting us into a deeper and more personal relationship.  What we hear today is that this type of relationship is not possible if we live only by the “letter of the law.”  This relationship is about hearing the voice of God and responding to it.  It is about knowing God and allowing God to know us.

Although Matthew’s Gospel may sound a bit stern and demanding, our God is a loving God who will be there for us, eternally patient with our missteps, and ready to bolster the strength of our relational foundation with Him.

Question of the Day:  How will you put your faith into practice not out of selfishness but out of love for God and your neighbor?

Prayer:  “Why did God make you?  God made me to know Him, to love Him and serve Him, and to be happy with Him forever in heaven.”  (Lesson 1 – Baltimore Catechism)

Please continue to pray for the victims of the Coronavirus and for all who have been affected by this unprecedented pandemic as well as for peace in our country and in our world.
