Thursday of the Twenty-Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

October 17, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast: Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35 AD – c. 108) Bishop, Martyr and Church Father

Romans 2:1-11

Psalm 62

Luke 11:42-46

Today we celebrate the memorial feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch, an early martyr of the church.  It is said that this St. Ignatius was possibly held by Jesus as a baby and studied with some of the original apostles.  He greatly influenced many through his writings some of which were written on his way to die in the Colosseum in Rome.

Luke’s Gospel message, for me, is expressing the idea of a “New Message.”  As a former history teacher I believe knowledge comes from looking at what has been, considering what could be and then acting accordingly.  The Gospel calls us today to consider the past and the consequences and to consider how a true partnership with God could create a more loving and fulfilling future for all people.  Luke reminds us that rather than feel the conflict in the laws of society and the laws of God we are called to live a life respecting God’s expectations and to lovingly remind ourselves and others to work towards a society that incorporates God’s expectations because, as children of God we are one society

Question of the Day: Can you change the future as you express your love for our Sacred Lord?

Prayer: Lord, give me the strength to sacrifice everything for You, so that in doing so I may become worthy of You.
