The Passion of Saint John the Baptist

Thursday, August 29, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Jeremiah 1:17-19

Psalm 71:1-2, 3-4a, 5-6ab, 15ab and 17

Mark 6:17-29

About three years before our Lord’s Passion, Saint John the Baptist experienced his own.  The word passion, along with the word nativity is reserved only for two other people; our Lord Jesus and His Mother Mary.  This shows the uniqueness of Saint John the Baptist who looks and acts and even speaks like an Old Testament prophet but was chosen to point himself to our Lord Jesus.

John didn’t live for himself but for God and for others.  He was not afraid to speak the truth which led to his own passion and death.  He spoke out about King Herod’s immoral activities, he said. “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”  Herod lacked the courage to accept the truth about himself and had John beheaded.

As we celebrate the Passion of John the Baptist we thank God for his example, and the example of all the saints who have gone before us in faith, for their heroic fidelity to the Lord, and their steadfast dedication to passing on the message they were given to us and for the generations to come.

Question of the Day:  Do you have the courage to speak out against injustice in our world?

Prayer:  Father, You chose St. John the Baptist to be the forerunner of Your Son who was born and died for us.  Grant that, as St. John was martyred for truth and justice, so we may energetically profess our Faith in You.
