September 5, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Colossians 1:9-14

Psalm 98:2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6

Luke 5:1-11

Today’s Gospel recalls the circumstances of Peter (although at that time he was still called Simon,) James and John’s call to follow Jesus.  After a long night on the water these professional fishermen had caught nothing.  Jesus climbs into the boat and off they go for another try.  They lowered the nets and caught a huge amount of fish.  When Simon-Perter saw this, he fell to his knees and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.”  Could this have been the very first celebration of the sacrament of Reconciliation?  If so, Simon-Peter, James and John’s penance was to follow Jesus.

Simon-Peter shows his trust, his humility, and most of all his faith in Jesus by leaving all that he had to follow and learn from Jesus.  An English Protestant evangelist of the 19th century, Oswald Chambers, once said, “Faith never knows where it is being led, but it loves and knows the One who is leading.”  That is what is happening here, and it is at the root of why Jesus takes Peter to be one of those closest to Him in His work and even in His passion.  Peter will love Jesus, will continually fail even after Pentecost, and yet will be the leader of the Twelve and of the Church.
