Thursday of the Twenty-Sixth Week in Ordinary Time

October 3, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Nehemiah 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12

Psalm 19

Luke 10:1-12

Have you ever imagined what it must have been like to be a disciple, a follower of Jesus during His life on earth?  Those common women and men accomplished great things and the Gospels of them show their human sides.  What must it have been like to be sent away to prepare for Jesus to visit towns and village to bring the Good News to the people they encounter.  The instructions from Jesus prove that the journey would not be an easy task.  The disciples hear that the harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few.  They will be like lambs among wolves.  They are to take the bear necessities with them and no more.  They truly were “road warriors.”  BUT THEY DID IT!

The lesson we are taught today is for us to keep taking steps in our journey, even if we are not feeling particularly close to God.  We do this with our love for God and our neighbor, in our prayer life, in our ability to share our time, talent and treasure at our church and in our community, and to set the example of true discipleship to others.

We have to listen for our own call and find holiness in our lives.  For some that call will be for the road, and for some, the journey will take place closer to home.  We must be open to Jesus’ call and be ready for the trip.

Question of the Day:  Are you ready to journey for Jesus?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, walk with me in my journey through life as I proclaim your Holy Word to the world.
