Entrance Antiphon for September 12, 2019:  “Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, by the Lord God Most High, above all women on the earth; for he has so exalted your name that your praise shall be undying on our lips.”

President Abraham Lincoln was once asked about his attitude toward his enemies: “Why do you try to make friends of them?  You should destroy them.”  “Am I not destroying my enemies,” Lincoln replied gently, “When I make them my friends?”

In today’s Gospel Jesus teaches us to love those who do not love in return or to love our enemies and not just our friends.  If Jesus tells us to love even our own enemies, then I can say that this is a special kind of love, a different kind of love.  It is a Christian kind of love.  This is what identifies us as followers of Jesus.  It is because our human nature compels us to take revenge on someone who has offended us – and we don’t.  Someone once said that when a person urges us to make peace and shake hands with our enemy we say something like, “Over my dead body!”  But this is exactly what we are going to do as followers as Christ, that is, we should die precisely to our natural reactions and put on the heart of Jesus who forgives His enemies while hanging on the cross.

And so what makes Christians different and what makes Christianity distinct from any other religion?  It is by treating others, not as they deserve, but as God wishes them to be treated.  That is with love and kindness.

Question of the Day:  Can you love others, even those who have offended you?

Prayer:  “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”  (Mt. 6:14-15)
