A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (18:1-5, 10)

The disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?”
He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said,
“Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children,
you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.
Whoever humbles himself like this child
is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.

And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones,
for I say to you that their angels in heaven
always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”

Reflect: I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. Jesus uses this gospel passage to help us understand that if we are to be great in the Kingdom of heaven, we must be humble and trusting as little children. At the same time, he drives home the point that we must have great respect for “these little ones” since “their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”  God provides each of us with a special angel, a guardian angel, who plays a unique role in connecting our lives to the divine. Saint Basil the Great taught that “each and every member of the faithful has a Guardian Angel to protect, guard, and guide them through life.” Saint Bernard of Clairvaux taught that the Guardian Angels were proof “that heaven denies us nothing that assists us” and “these celestial spirits have been placed at our sides to protect us, instruct us and to guide us.” (See Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, 216) Holy Guardian Angels: Hear our prayer!

Questions: Do I acknowledge that God has provided me with a Guardian Angel? How might I better accept God’s gift of a particular angel to watch over me? What are the ways and times throughout the day that I might call upon my Guardian Angel?

Pray: Loving God, thank you for the gift of my Guardian Angel. Through your grace, may I always be protected and defended by my Guardian Angel and rejoice to know that I remain in their company at all times. I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
