Truly Seeing and Hearing
Malvern Minute

July 27, 2017 – Thursday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom. Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (13:10-17)

The disciples approached Jesus and said,
“Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?”
He said to them in reply,
“Because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven
has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted.

To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich;
from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
This is why I speak to them in parables, because
they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand.

Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says:

You shall indeed hear but not understand,
you shall indeed look but never see.
Gross is the heart of this people,
they will hardly hear with their ears,
they have closed their eyes,
lest they see with their eyes
and hear with their ears
and understand with their hearts and be converted
and I heal them.

“But blessed are your eyes, because they see,
and your ears, because they hear.
Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people
longed to see what you see but did not see it,
and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Reflect: Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Jesus speaks to the apostles about the blessing and grace they receive from being with him: “knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven has been granted to you.” They are privileged to walk and talk with Jesus on a daily basis. His love, his word gradually penetrates their hearts.  Jesus met the apostles where they were. He provided parables for others so that they could have the opportunity to begin to grasp the message of the Kingdom of God.  We are thousands of years removed from the time when Jesus walked the earth with his disciples; yet, he is with us still and he meets us where we are.  Jesus is present to us most powerfully in the Eucharist and in his Word. The Holy Spirit is constantly trying to get our attention. Because God is with us; because the Word of God is so vibrant and alive, we are privileged to see and hear the words of Jesus often.  He is near to us. The challenge is for us to pay attention to his word. We can be like those who “look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand”, or truly blessed because we have eyes that see and ears that hear. Let’s take time to be still before God so that we can be attentive to his word and how he asks us to put that word into action in our lives.

Questions: As I listen to and read the Word of God do I pray for the grace to see, hear and understand? Do I recognize how privileged I am to have access to Jesus and his word? What distracts me from giving my full attention to the Word of God; and can I ask God to remove those distractions so that I can understand with my heart and be converted?

Pray: Loving God, your word is vibrant and alive!  Help me to open my eyes and to hear with my ears so that your gift is not wasted on me. Give me a heart that seeks your word and desires to meditate on it so that I might be converted and healed. I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Holy God; holy and might One; holy and immortal One: Have mercy on us and on the whole world.
