Tuesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

March 31, 2020

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Book of Numbers 21:4-9

Psalm 102

John 8:21-30

In today’s Gospel we come to understand that many people believed in Jesus and His message, yet many others, including the religious leaders, opposed Him.  Some openly mocked Him when He warned them about their sin of unbelief.  I believe it is impossible to be indifferent to Jesus’ Holy Word and His judgements.  We are either for Him or against Him.  There is no middle ground!

Jesus spoke about going away and His meaning was to return to His Father in glory.  His opponents could not follow Him because of their continued disobedience to the Word of God and their refusal to accept Him.  They had shut themselves off from God.

Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM…”  “I AM!”  In the Book of Exodus, Chapter 3, when Moses received the call, God identified Himself as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of your father.  After Moses received his mandate God told him I AM has sent you

Did the Pharisees miss this, or were they so blind they could not see who Jesus really was?  The Pharisees were warned that if they continued to refuse Him they shut themselves off from God and they would die for their sins and they would belong to what is below.  How plain is that?

God gives us time to turn to Him and receive His grace.  When we consider the Coronavirus and its effects on the world that time is right nowRemember, there is no middle ground!

Question of the Day:  Do you believe in the teachings of our Lord Jesus or are you an unbeliever as the Pharisees were?

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, let the knowledge of salvation enlighten our hearts, so that, freed from fear and from the power of our enemies, we may serve you faithfully all the days of our life.  Amen.

Please continue to pray for the victims of the Coronavirus and for all who are affected by this unprecedented pandemic.
