First Book of Samuel 1:9-20

Psalm (1 Sm. 2)

Mark 1:21-28

“All were amazed” as Jesus was “teaching with authority!”  Many of the Old Testament prophets also taught with authority.  Even John the Baptist taught with authority.  But Jesus is different from all who came before Him.  In a short period of time the people of Israel will understand that later in His life Jesus is not only a special vessel of God’s Word, but that He actually IS God’s Word.

It is interesting that in today’s Gospel the demon helps to confirm the identity and role of Christ in two separate ways; first it recognizes Jesus as “the Holy One of God” and it becomes immediately obedient to the authoritative Word that Jesus speaks.  Second, Our Lord immediately gains an even higher standing in the eyes of those in the synagogue congregation and will move on to teach and to heal in even greater ways.

So, what does all this have to do with us?  First, I believe we too must let the Word of God become the very nourishment of our lives and guide us in every way.  We need to study it, pray it, love it, and let it be our Law.  We also need to constantly pray for the Holy Spirt to bring that Word to active life within us.  Lastly, we must be able to speak and act with and in the power and authority of that Word, not in a domineering or critical way, but by letting God’s light shine in all that we are, in what we do and what we say.  We must show the presence of God within us.  We all must become servants of the Lord.

I truly believe that God will make Himself known to others through us and will protect us from the demons we may encounter in our lives and in the lives of others.

Question of the Day:  Are you convinced that the Holy Word of God is your pathway to heaven?  Will you help convince others as well?

Prayer:  “Your Words are Spirit and Life, O Lord: richer than gold, stronger than death.  Your Words are Spirit and Life, O Lord, life everlasting.”  (Song by Bernadette Farrell)
