Tuesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

June 2, 2020

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Memorial Feast:  Saints Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs (+304)

Second Letter of Saint Peter 3:12-15a, 17-18

Psalm 90

Mark 12:13-17

In today’s Gospel reading, the Pharisees and Herodians ask Jesus if it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not.  The question they ask Jesus is a trap.  If He answers that it is right to pay the tax He will anger the people; and if He answers that it is not right He will be reported to the Romans as a rebel.  There seems to be no way out of this dilemma.  However, our Lord’s final answer is, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”  What dilemma? If you had the opportunity to ask Jesus a question would it be in the form of a “trick” question?  Why not attempt to find the truth?

As followers of Christ, we have a duty to participate and live out our faith in all areas of our lives, including in the public sphere.  Jesus highlights this duty for us in today’s Gospel.  Religion and the public life/common good are not in opposition with each other.  Even more so, it is an important part of our duty as Christians to hold each other accountable, to promote social justice and help bring about the Kingdom of God on earth.  Our relationship with God has to extend out to others; we can’t just neglect the work and avoid our civic responsibilities.  Respect, just laws, paying taxes, and so forth, deserver our support and cooperation.

Question of the Day:  In what ways might you be able to go a little deeper into your Christian responsibility to contribute to the common good?

Prayer:  “May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to His call.  Amen.”  (Gospel Acclamation for June 2, 2020.)

Please continue to pray for the victims of the Coronavirus and for all who are affected by this unprecedented pandemic.
