Letter of Saint James 4:1-10

Psalm 55

Mark 9:30-37

Can you imagine how embarrassed the disciples must have been when Jesus overheard them arguing about which among them was the greatest?  But aren’t we like the disciples?  We compare ourselves with others and/or desire their praise.  This type of appetite for greatness seems to be inbred in us.  From a very young age we are pushed to be successful in academics, sports, and in our professions.  Most of us would rather be a “somebody” rather that a “nobody.”

We are all taught a valuable lesson as Jesus embraces a child to show His disciples who really is the greatest in the kingdom of God.  What can a little child possibly teach us about greatness?  Children in the ancient world had no rights, no position, and no privileges of their own.  Essentially they were at the “bottom rung” in the community ladder and were at the beck and call of their parents.

What then is the significance of Our Lord’s gesture?  He elevated a little child in the presence of His disciples by placing the child in a privileged position of honor.  Just like it is customary today to seat the guest of honor at the right hand of their host.

Who is the greatest in God’s kingdom?  It is the one who is humble and lowly at heart.  Jesus came not to be served, but to serve – and so should we!

Question of the Day:  Will you be an example of humility and service to others, especially to those closest to you?

Prayer:  “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”  Matthew 23-12.
