Letter of Saint James 1:12-18

Psalm 94

Mark 8:14-21

In 1997 I was asked to be a guest speaker at a convention.  It was difficult to turn down since it was being held in Las Vegas, Nevada.  While I was there I was able to go to the Siegfried and Roy Magic show.  These are the guys with the famous white tiger act.  Every illusion they performed was amazing.  Have you ever seen a full sized elephant disappear?  I did!  But, as I said it was an illusion and done for entertainment purposes only.

In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus questioning the disciples about why they don’t understand who He is even after witnessing, with their own eyes, the miracle of the feeding of the multitude.  Our Lord used this teachable moment directed at the disciples and to us to kind of pull them out of their spiritual stupor.  The disciples were so wrapped up into their own world of physical needs, as in only having a few loaves of bread among them that they failed to understand the significance of Jesus’ miracles.  It is almost as if miracles, like a magicians illusions, were common place.  They are not!

What then can we take away from Jesus’ teaching?  Like the disciples we too can be in a “spiritual stupor” that can only be awakened through the Gospel’s and the power of God’s Holy Word.  We must also conclude that we have seen far too much evidence from the Scriptures s to who Christ is to remain “unbelievers.”

Friends, shouldn’t we be grateful that Jesus calls us both individually and as believers of a faith community?  It is in this faith community that we have learned of and experienced love, mercy, forgiveness, hope and understanding.  Today, let us choose the leaven of hope, the leaven of faith, and the leaven of love as Jesus showed the first disciples.  Trust in Jesus…He is no illusion

Question of the Day:  Do you not yet understand or comprehend?  Or do you have eyes that see and ears and hear that Jesus is truly the Son of God?

Prayer:  “Whoever loves me will keep my Word, says the Lord; and my Father will love him and we will come to him.”  (Gospel Acclamation for February 18, 2020.)
