Matthew 5:13-16

Today’s Gospel narrative is part of the Sermon on the Mount.  In this passage, Jesus reveals what His disciples are called to be, “The Salt of the earth and the Light of the World.”  What is our Lord trying to tell them?

Galilee, during the time of Jesus, had a large fishing industry.  Many of the Gospel stories are about fish and how to catch them.  Fish was exported to many parts of the Roman Empire, well salted to keep the catch fresh.  Therefore, being ‘salt of the earth’ would be a relevant image to the people who were listening to Jesus.

Even today we sometimes say that someone is ‘the salt of the earth.’  What we mean is that he or she are dependable, follows through on things begun, makes a contribution to their community and lives by their cherished beliefs.  Parishes and communities have been built up and maintained by people who are the ‘salt of the earth.’  We thank God for their continued contributions to His people.

How then do we keep ourselves ‘salty?’  We can maintain our ‘freshness’ by receiving the Eucharist as often as possible, by our individual prayer life, by loving our neighbors, and by setting an example by living a Christlike life.  Jesus give us the bread of life; we give it its flavor wherever we are.

Friends, with this sort of commitment, we become a ‘light to the world,’ because the light we shine is the Light of Jesus shining from within.  Pope Francis often reminds us to, “Allow Jesus out.”  May our lives be strong like salt and encouraging like light?

Question of the Day:  How will you be the ‘salt’ and help preserve the lives of others?

Prayer:  Lord God, You are the Light of my life.  May I bring the light of love and friendship to all I meet.  Amen,

Prosit
