First Book of Kings 17:7-16

Psalm 4

Matthew 5:13-16

In today’s first reading from the First Book of Kings we hear the story of the prophet Elijah and the widow Zarephath.  She trusts the promise of the great prophet.  She and her son will be taken care of, if she relies upon the fidelity of God and acts hospitably in caring for the prophet before herself and her son.  Of course, God is faithful and she and her son are provided for.  The reason that I love the story is because it leads me to ask for the grace to trust in God’s fidelity to me to such a degree that I might care for others with less concern for my own interests.

In our Gospel narrative Jesus is very direct as he tells His disciples, “You are the salt of the earth.”  How important we are for life on this earth to have, “flavor.”  Life is “taste-less” if we do not live our lives credibly.  If we don’t live our lives as witnesses that we are loved by God and are preparing to spend eternal life sharing God’s love by giving our love away here, then what else could “preserve” life’s meaning?  All of life’s experiences, no matter how fulfilling it may be, will eventually “spoil” and leave us unsatisfied.

Question of the Day:  How will you offer “hospitality” to those in need, especially to a stranger?

Prayer:  Lord, let us give flavor to this world.  Continue to nourish the gifts you give us.  Help us to acknowledge, accept and appreciate what you give us.  Amen.

Please continue to pray for the victims of the Coronavirus and for all who are affected by this unprecedented pandemic as well as for peace in our country and in our world.
