Book of the Prophet Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13

Psalm 34:2-3, 6-7, 17-19, 23

Matthew 21:28-32

Today’s reading from the prophet Zephaniah reminds us that no matter how highly we think of ourselves there is something greater in the universe than us.  It seems that many people today, like the inhabitants of the city referred to in the reading, seemed to have lost our way and replaced God with our own version of divinity.  We worship athletes, singers, actors, politicians and so forth as if they were gods.  They are not!

Many of us spend so much of our time consumed with ourselves, our appearance, our careers, our appliances, our leisure time and so forth.  It’s an easy and endless slide that the Lord condemns in Zephaniah today.  How can we break free from the tempting pitfall of self-obsession and self-absorption?

My former parish in Maryland is served by priests from the Society of Jesus.  The Jesuit Order’s guiding principal is “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam – For the Greater Glory of God.”  This guiding principal is a reminder that the work of the Jesuits is not for the glorification of themselves or some human institution, but to acknowledge that God is at the center of all that they do.

“For the Greater Glory of God!”  This motto might serve as an easy way to re-conceptualize what we are doing here one earth and what should be at the center of our lives.  It’s a simply a way of seeing what would happen when we kick out the “self” and replace it with “God.”

Question of the Day:  How will you put the spirit “For the Greater Glory of God” at the center of the Advent season?

Prayer:  “The Just Judge will bestow a crown of righteousness on those who eagerly await His coming.”  2 Timothy 4:8.
