Romans 8:18-25

Psalm 126

Luke 13:18-21

Chapters 11-13 of Saint Luke’s Gospel highlight the growing opposition to the person of Jesus.  The charges of healing by the power of Beelzebub, non-observance of prescribed washings, the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, are just some of the examples of the opposition He encountered.  Nonetheless, the reign of God, specifically, God’s presence and working in the world, continued to grow in the lives of the disciples.

The example of the two parables of the mustard seed and the yeast stress this increase in faith.  The tiny mustard seed and a small lump of yeast produce great results. Namely, a shrub that grew to a great height and the expansion of dough several times its original size.  The Apostles themselves are excellent examples of modest beginnings.  Jesus did not choose superstars as His first followers.  There were, in our contemporary terms, no former class valedictorians or student council presidents in their number.  They were generally considered insignificant persons living in the “backwater” of civilization.

Friends, there are any number of lessons to be learned from these parables.  First of all, God often uses seemingly “weak instruments” to get His point across.  This is our reminder to never overlook anybody, and never count anybody out.

Secondly, there is an obvious period of time involved in a bush’s growth or in the raising of dough.  Too often we wish the reign of God to be apparent and immediate.  Paul tells us in the first reading that we must await with patience what we cannot see.  This, of course, is easy to say but difficult to do.

Question of the Day: Will you take notice to all who are great and to all who are small?

Prayer: Loving Father, strengthen my trust in You.  Help me to bear patiently everything that Your holy will asks of me.
