Tuesday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

November 19, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Second Book of Maccabees 6:18-31

Psalm 3

Luke 19:1-10

Today we hear the familiar story of Zacchaeus.  He was the “chief tax collector” and a man who was most probably dislike by the public and treated like an outcast in his own community.  When Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was entering the town of Jericho he wanted to “see” Him.  But he was short in stature so he climbed a tree to getter a better vantage point.  But Jesus saw him first and asked if He could stay at his home.  So, again Jesus is staying at the house of yet another sinner and is criticized for it.  Haven’t we heard Jesus say in the past, “those who are not ill do not need a physician?”

Because of His encounter with Zacchaeus changed from a man of greed and arrogance to a fuller life of kindness and honesty.  This is the gift he received from our Lord.  He knew that if he only saw Jesus something just might rub off on him – and it did.

Jesus saw the desire for change in Zacchaeus.  People find it difficult to believe that God sees into our hearts and His mere look can change our lives.  Jesus actually saw behind the mask of Zacchaeus’ greed, his fears and his sins.

Friends, God loves us for who we are, and who we can become.  We can change, we can amend our lives.  That is the gift of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Many of us would have difficulty in repenting for our past sins in the manner of Zacchaeus.  Giving half of what we own to the poor may create hardships in which we may not be able to recover from.  But consider this; to make life changing decisions that bring us closer to God would have the same effect as what Zacchaeus decided to do to amend his life.

We all must never forget that Jesus would love to invite Himself into our homes and into our lives.  Jesus is the Divine Physician and the doctor is in!

Question of the Day:  Are you able to amend your life from what it is to what it may be?

Prayer:  Jesus, my brother, let my whole being be consumed in the will of the Father so that I may be worthy of Your love.
