Zechariah 8:20-23

Psalm 87

Luke 9:51-56

In today’s Gospel Jesus, like the prophets, is heading toward Jerusalem.  He makes a side trip to a Samaritan village, the hated enemies of the Jewish people.  Jewish people who passed through Samaritan territory were often assaulted or treated with disrespect.  Our Lord sends a messenger so a place for them to stay could be arranged.  The Samaritans refused to offer them hospitality.

James and John said, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”  They really deserve the nickname Christ gave them, “Sons of Thunder” because of their fiery temperaments.  They wanted quick results and they believe in the use of force or threats of force.  The brothers forgot Jesus’ lesson when he taught His disciples, “Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. “  (Mt 11:29)  Jesus rebukes the reaction of violence and hatred and is totally opposed to the suggestion.  He tells them that, “The Son of Man did not come to destroy people’s lives but to save them.”

Sisters and brothers, in our apostolic work we too may come across resistance and opposition.  The reaction of a good Christian is not to get angry with those people who opposed and resisted but to be more patient with them. The task of a disciple of Jesus is not to destroy but to build up.  We must temper our tendency to return evil for evil.  The key to ending our tendency to return evil for evil is forgiveness and surrender to a higher power who is God.  When we learn to accept others as they are without making judgments or taking their inventory, we can live and let live.

Question of the Day:  Do you love those who offend you and do you seek to return evil with good?

Prayer:  Lord, open my heart to my brothers and sisters.  Teach me the secret of serving them with humility, so that I may forgive those who hurt me and become more like you.
