Wednesday after Epiphany

January 6, 2021

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Saint Mary Magdalen Parish, Media, PA

Memorial Feast:  Saint Andre Bessette, Religious (1845-+1937) Patron Saint of the Universal Church

First Letter of Saint John4:11-18

Psalm 72

Mark 6:45-52

Today’s Gospel narrative of Saint Mark includes two of the mighty works of Jesus.  The passage today looks back to the feeding of the five thousand and recounts Jesus walking on the water.  These physical miracles astounded the apostles.  They were simply in awe; afraid, confused and overwhelmed.

We may not witness physical miracles, but there may be miracles of grace taking place in our lives.  Examples of such mighty works may be reconciliation after lengthy estrangement, recovery from addiction or taking advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Accompanying such “miracles” of grace may include any number of emotional feelings.

Sisters and brothers, Jesus provides the key to recognizing, understanding and appreciating these mighty works in His “going to the mountain to pray.”  Reflections on experience are necessary in order to discern how God is present and working in our lives.  Our first reading from Saint John points at the predisposition for this awareness, namely, our love for one another which leads to the relationship we have with God in our lives.  Mighty works can only take place when we reach out to others.

We may at times envy the apostles who were eye witnesses of the many mighty works of Jesus.  We can take heart because the age of miracles are far from over.

Question of the Day:  How will you create miracles as you live a Sacramental life?

Prayer:  “A people who walked in darkness has seen a great light; for those dwelling in a land of deep gloom, a light has shone.”  Is 9:1.

Prosit
