Book of the Prophet Jonah 3:1-10

Psalm 51

Luke 11:29-32

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the crowd, “This generation is an evil generation!”  If He said that then what would He say about our generation?  What might He say of the generations to come after us?

We all have what I like to call “blind spots.”  Sometimes we are just not aware of our own faults and we make a mistake by being too hard on others for theirs.  We may even be right about those faults, but we must remember that we all need mercy.  Today our Responsorial Psalm reminds us that, “A heart contrite and humbled, O Gold, you will not spurn.”

Like Jonah, in our first reading, we are also limited in our capacity to see the big picture, or we actually ignore it.  I wonder how Jonah’s outlook would have been if he had known that his preaching would become part of an important lesson used by our Lord in today’s Gospel.

Luke’s Gospel contains a stern warning.  Jesus does not mince words with these folks who have the light of truth right in front of them, but, they are in their “blind spot” and pay no attention to it.

Today we are reminded that we who have the light in our midst need to be especially vigilant about living our life faithfully, not just during the Season of Lent, but throughout the entire year.

Question of the Day:  Will you eliminate the “blind spots” in your life in order to bear witness to the Light of Christ?

Prayer:  May God grant all of us discernment and courage to be bearers of the Light of Christ.
