First Book of Samuel 24:3-21

Psalm 57

Mark 3:13-19

There is a coffee shop not far from my home in Delaware County, Pennsylvania called “Bure Bred.”  I just love that place.  Not because it’s close to my home but because it has a variety of coffee choices.  They have “Kona” from Hawaii which is my absolute favorite coffee.  The theme of the shop is “dog’s.”  Hence the name “Pure Bread.”  They also have a running video of various dogs that their owners sent in.  I also admire the names owners give there dogs.  You can just imagine.

Names are important.  A name is part of how we are recognized and identified.  Have you ever considered the calling, appointing and naming of the Twelve Apostles?  Would we have the courage to accept the call from Jesus?  Better yet, do we have the courage to be one of His disciples in the world we live in?

Mark’s Gospel makes it clear that immediately before the naming of the Apostles Jesus had stirred serious controversy by forgiving the sins of a paralytic man, dining with tax collectors and sinners, and healing a man’s withered hand on the Sabbath.  By accepting their appointment and mission to preach and drive out demons as Jesus did, the Apostles will be labeled as controversial and dangerous as their leader.

Here are a few questions that I would like you to think about; What demons would Jesus be driving out today?  Who would He be healing?  Who would He be eating with?  What would be the subject of His preaching?  Again, would you have the courage and faith to follow such a man when He called you?

YES!  Of course, Jesus is calling each of us every day of our lives.  We all need to discern in our lives what that call is and if we are truly willing to accept it.  But, in one way or another, it involves dining with and caring for the poor and marginalized, loving, forgiving, healing, welcoming the stranger, and working for peace and justice in the world.  By the way, Jesus does not have to give us a name – He already knows it!  See you at “Pure Bread.”

Question of the Day:  Will you call on the names of others to become disciples of Jesus and lead then through your example?

Prayer:  My Lord and my God, grant that I may bring You to all people by the way I live my life.  Help me to do my share in changing the world for the better.
