Matthew 13:1-9

Today’s Gospel narrative is the parable of the sower. The sower seeds his field and some fall on the footpath, some on rocky ground, some on thorny ground and some fall on good soil. When a farmer sows seed he scatters seeds in all directions as he walks up and down the field. As a result of this procedure we can actually understand how some seeds took root and others did not. Jesus uses His examples for the benefit of the hearers of His word.

The sower is God and the seed is God’s word and His Kingdom. The different kinds of soils, or grounds, are the different human reception or different ways of accepting God’s word and they produce (or not produce) different types of fruit accordingly.

Friends, the point of the story is that, despite the results, God’s kingdom is, after all, God’s work, and in the end the yield will be astounding. The parable, rather than being a story about us, is actually a story about Himself, a statement of Jesus’ trust in His Father, of Jesus’ refusal to give in to the discouragement that must have tempted Him. It is a message that all of us Christians, and particularly those in any kind of ministry, need to take to heart. Things often do seem pretty bleak, within the Church as well as within the world at large. We simply have to

trust as Jesus did. That was the message our Lord had for His listeners, and it is a message no less timely for us modern Christians as well.

Question of the Day: How will you become sowers of God’s Holy Word to others?

Prayer: “The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to him will live forever.”
