Second Book of Samuel 7:4-17

Psalm 89

Mark 4:1-20

There is a story that is told about President Franklin Roosevelt who often endured long receiving lines at the White House.  He complained that no one really paid any attention to what was said.  One day, during a reception, he decided to try an experiment.  To each person who passed down the line and shook his hand, he murmured, “I murdered my grandmother this morning.”  The guests responded with phrases such as, “Marvelous!  Keep up the good work.  We are so proud of you.  God bless you sir.”  It was not until the end of the line, while greeting the ambassador from Bolivia, that his words were actually heard.  The Bolivian ambassador leaned over and whispered, “I’m sure she had it coming.”

Today’s Gospel is the parable of the sower and it’s aim is directed to all of us.  That aim is to hear, understand and act on Jesus’ Words.  There are different ways of accepting God’s Word and accordingly they produce different kinds of fruits.  Upon relating the parable Jesus gives us His best advice, “Whoever has ears to hear ought to hear.”

Friends, it’s not enough to hear the Word of God, we must live it.  We can’t let the faith and fervor we feel at church wither and die outside the church walls.  We need to hear the Word of God, really listen, think about it, understand it, and live it.  We need the rich soil in which God’s Word can take root and thrive.  It’s easy to let evil or apathy take over.  It’s hard to have conviction and live God’s Word, but remember, the resulting harvest will be amazing.

Question of the Day:  Will you allow the Word of God to resonate in your heart and compel you to share it with others.

Prayer:  “The seed is the Word of God, Christ is the sower; all who come to Him will live forever.”  (Gospel acclamation for January 29, 2020.)
