Romans 13:8-10

Psalm 112

Luke 14:25-33

I suspect most of us have never asked the question, “What does Christianity have to offer that is worth giving up everything else for, including one’ own family and even their life?”  Today our Lord offered His disciples, and us, a priceless treasure – “true happiness, peace, and joy with Our Father in His heavenly Kingdom.”   The picture now becomes clearer, doesn’t it?

I believe that to “gain all” one must be willing to “give all.”  There is no room for compromise or concession with God.  We must either give our lives over to Him completely or we keep them for ourselves.  In 1 Corinthians (6:19b, 20) Paul the Apostle says, “We are not our own.  We were bought with a price.”  That price is the blood of Jesus shed for us on the cross.

I think we need to understand what Jesus is not telling us what to do.  He is not telling us not to dream great dreams or not to undertake significant tasks, but He does ask us not to act in a heedless manner, no matter how unselfish our goal is or what we generously offer of ourselves in order to achieve it.  We can never forget His teachings on achieving the Kingdom of Heaven.

What our Lord is trying to get across here is that following Him can make heavy demands on us as individuals and that we should consider whether we are up to these demands or not.  Our guide here is to follow the commitment of Mary to her Son.  Difficult?  Yes!  But a guide nonetheless.

Question of the Day:  Are you prepared to “give all” to “gain all?”

Prayer:  Lord Jesus Christ Crucified, I commend myself in life and in death to Your blessed hands nailed to the Cross.
