Wednesday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time

November 20, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Second Book of Maccabees 7:1, 20-31

Psalm 17

Luke 19:11-28

There is a story about a young freelance artist who tried to sell his sketches to a number of art gallery’s, syndicated newspapers, and to other potential clients.  They all turned him down stating that he had little to no talent.

But the young man had faith in his ability and kept trying to sell his work.  Finally he was given a job making drawings for a church publicity publication.  He rented a mouse-infested garage as his studio and continued to produce drawings in the hope that someone would buy them.  One of the mice in the garage inspired him.  As a result, the young artist created “Mickey Mouse.”  The artist was none other than Walt Disney.  It was because of the diligence and perseverance of the young artist that led him to success and at the same time a blessing for countless others.

Likewise, the parable of the gold coins in today’s Gospel challenges us to cultivate regularly our God-given talents, qualities and virtues in order to produce good fruit.  Like a garden that is well taken care of in order to produce fruit or flowers our talents are not to be kept to us personally or secretly, they must be shared with others.  We must always feel thankful and blessed by God who has bestowed our gifts.  At the end of our lives we will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well we handled what God has entrusted to us.   I suspect that Mr. Disney’s accomplishments were very well received…don’t you?

Question(s) of the Day:  Do I share my talents with others?  Is my success a blessing to my community?  Could my life of “good examples” help others come closer to Christ?

Prayer:  My Lord and my God, help me to make good use of the talents You have given me for the good of others and for Your greater glory.
