Wednesday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

September 25, 2019

Deacon Anthony J. Cincotta

Assistant Director for Retreat Ministry

Ezra 9:5-9

Psalm (Tobit 13:2, 3-4a, 6cd, 7-8, 6fg)

Luke 9:1-6

After he preached, taught and healed in Galilee, Jesus commissions and instructs the Twelve to do likewise.  He gives them the power and authority over all demons and to cure the sick.  Additionally, He gave them very particular “marching orders.”  They were to take no staff or traveling bag, no bread or money, one coat and to accept the hospitality of those who welcomed them.  Their main task was to proclaim the Good News.

Our Lord also has commissioned us as well.  Our journey involves a different type of “marching orders.”  We are prepared to bring the Good News of the Gospel to others through our modern day means of communication.  Still, we teach, preach and heal.  We teach by sharing graced experiences with others.  We preach by our example to others.  We heal by being present and listening with compassion.

As Jesus points out there may be rejection.  There is to be no fire and brimstone, either literally of figuratively.  Ezra, in our first reading, and the disciples, with their limited resources, help us to realize that our efforts only bring results through the Holy Sprit within us.  Marching orders?  Indeed.

Question of the Day:  Do you allow Jesus to lead you to share your faith with others?

Prayer:  Lord, make me serve you always with perfect fidelity.

Consider joining the Men and Women of Malvern by deepening your personal relationship with Jesus and your commitment as a disciple through a weekend retreat.
