Book of the Prophet Job 9:1-12, 14-16

Psalm 88:10-15

Luke 9:57-62

Today Saint Luke has put together three short passages that give us a picture of a Jesus that we don’t often see.  A Jesus whom I would say is burning with zeal, and absolutely driven by the Spirit.  This Jesus is a whirlwind, His hand on the plow and eager to proclaim the Kingdom, the Good News, to a world waiting for hope and relief from the loneliness of the human condition.  Well, at least that the way I see Him.

Our Lord does not exactly encourage the three people who approach Him; He outlines in a most concrete manner what they need to expect if they follow Him, and it is not wealth, glory or a stability in this world.  We find that Jesus turns His back on what?  What then is important?  A place to sleep, a funeral, or the respect we pay to our family and relatives?

As for us, we must ask ourselves do we possess our memories, places and things, or do they possess us?  What then are our values, principles and priorities?  Finally, we come to the realization that we can’t totally escape the influence of the material reality that extends beyond water, food, clothing and shelter.  However, can we be free with all of the extra “stuff?”  If so, will we be able to find the same freedom that Jesus exhibits and live with the same energy and zeal that He does.  We can at least try our best.

Question of the Day:  Do I place my life in God’s hands and receive it back from Him as a complete gift and a call to have a personal relationship with Him?

Prayer:  “I consider all things so much rubbish that I may gain Christ and be found in Him.”  Amen.  (Gospel Acclamation for today’s liturgy.)
