Memorial Feast:  The Holy Angels – Michael, Gabriel and Raphael

Nehemiah 2:1-8

Psalm 137

Matthew 18:1-5, 10

The country-folk singer Kathy Mattea recorded a song that is perfect for our theme for today’s reflection.  The song is called “He keeps sending me angels – just like you.”  Angels, we believe, are messengers from God.  They protect us, heal us, call us, send us and unite us.  Michael the Archangel fought against evil and prevailed.  Gabriel, of course, announced to Mary her role as the Mother of our Savior and her role in salvation history.  Raphael was the healer and guide of Tobit, confirming him in his marriage to Sarah.

Today to honor divine Providence in the form of the guardian angel tradition, the Church has chosen the one passage in the Gospels (from the Gospel of Saint Matthew) where Jesus refers to the personal care of angels.  What wee notice is that Jesus’ words in this passage do not so much teach about guardian angels as to presume their existence as He makes another point; the importance of imitating the heavenly Father’s care for “the little ones.”

From the “Illustrated Lives of the Saints” we read, “The Guardian Angels defend those of whom they have charge against the assaults of the demons, endeavoring to preserve them from all evils of soul or body, particularly from sin and the occasions of sin.  They strive to keep us in the right path: if we fall they help us to rise again, encourage us to become more and more virtuous, suggest good thoughts and holy desires, offer our prayers and good actions to God, and, above all, assist us at the hour of death.

Question of the Day: Do you pray for the protection of your guardian angel?

Prayer:  “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day, be at my side, to light and guard, rule and guide.  Amen,”
