Memoria Feast: St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) Virgin and Doctor of the Church

Romans 1:16-25

Psalm 19

Luke 11:37-41

The first four words of today’s Gospel are very important; they were, “After Jesus had spoken…”  Is there any doubt that after the Pharisee had listened to Jesus he wanted to hear more?  The best way to do this is to invite Him to dinner.  He offered Jesus his “hospitality.”  He wanted to hear more from this extraordinary man who spoke the Word of God as no one else had ever done before.  Also, it wasn’t unusual for a rabbi to give a teaching over dinner.

But Jesus did something to offend His host.  He didn’t perform the ceremonial washing of hands before beginning His meal.  Did our Lord simply forget or was there an ulterior motive behind His behavior?  The Pharisee was “astonished” for this lack of tradition and respect.  What else would Jesus forget to do?  But Jesus turns the table on His host by admonishing him for his uncleanness of heart.

Which then is more important to God – clean hands or a clean mind and heart?  Jesus emphasized to the Pharisee that his harboring of evil thoughts makes him unclean spiritually – such as, greed, pride, bitterness, envy, arrogance and so forth.  But why then does He urge His host, and us, to give alms?  You see when we give freely and generously to those in need we express the virtues of love, kindness and mercy.  And if the heart is full of love and compassion, then there is no room for greed, pride, bitterness and the like.

Friends, absolutely everything Jesus said and did in His three year ministry was for a reason.  Today we are reminded to allow God’s love to transform our hearts, minds and actions toward our neighbors and to all those who suffer or in need of our generosity.  Can you just imagine what He could have taught us if He was with us six  or even ten years?

Question of the Day: Are you free in giving of your time, talent and treasure to those who are in need?

Prayer: Lord, fill us with your love and increase our thirst for holiness.
