Today’s Gospel narrative opens as some “people” come to Jesus and ask Him why His disciples do not fast. Everyone knew that the Pharisees fasted, as did the disciples of John the Baptist. Our Lord decides to respond to their question by using the example of a wedding feast.

Jesus tells His listeners that as long as the bridegroom is at the reception, the guests will continue to celebrate this joyous occasion. The time to fast will be when the bridegroom is no longer with them. He then uses the image of a cloak that is torn and needs to be patched. He tells them that anyone with sense would not use a new piece of material to patch the cloak. Finally, He uses the image of wineskins. He says that one should never put new wine into previously used wineskins because the skins would burst.

Friends, perhaps Jesus is inviting us to do something new rather than simply continuing to live out our old, “unhealthy” way of life. I suspect that all of us have at least one “unhealthy” part of our life we would like to change. Unfortunately, change is not easy. It is easy to make a New Year’s resolution. However, it is much more difficult to keep that resolution. This is where we turn our thoughts into prayerful motivation to make those changes. Our Lord Jesus is ready, willing, and able to assist us in our efforts to bring us closer to Him.

Question of the Day: What is one simple step you can take to change your life in order to follow more closely the teachings of Jesus?

Prayer: “The Word of God is living and effective, able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. Alleluia, alleluia.”
