A Mother’s Love: A Reflection for Mother’s Day
May 5, 2026
Mother’s Day offers a beautiful opportunity to reflect on one of God’s greatest gifts—the love of a mother. In the Catholic tradition, motherhood is not only honored as a vocation but cherished as a reflection of God’s own love: patient, nurturing, sacrificial, and faithful.

We see the perfect model of motherhood in the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her “yes” to God changed the course of salvation history. With humility and trust, she embraced her role as the Mother of Christ, walking with Him from the manger to the Cross. Her love was not without suffering, yet it remained steadfast. Mary teaches us that true motherhood is rooted in faith, courage, and self-giving love.
On this day, we give thanks for the mothers in our lives—those who raised us, guided us, prayed for us, and continue to support us. We also remember spiritual mothers: grandmothers, godmothers, religious sisters, and all women who nurture others in faith and love. Their quiet sacrifices often go unseen, but they bear lasting fruit.
At a place like Malvern Retreat House, Mother’s Day can also be a moment of prayer. We entrust our mothers—living and deceased—to the care of Our Lady, asking her to intercede for them. A simple prayer, a walk through the grounds, or a moment before a Marian shrine can become a powerful act of gratitude.
For those who find this day difficult, perhaps due to loss or longing, the Church gently reminds us that Mary is our mother too. She meets us in our sorrow and brings us comfort and peace.
This Mother’s Day, may we honor, remember, and pray for all mothers. And may we, like Mary, say “yes” to God’s love in our own lives.
